May 2016 – Xterra Malaysia Champs – Langkawi
Yes you’ve seen that correctly – a wind chill factor of 44 degrees ! It was my second time racing in Langkawi and loved it. Of all the Xterra races this has got to be one of the toughest, and is definitely the hottest and most adventuresome. As the finale of the Asian Tour, I was really happy to come in solid second place. Having racked up 3 wins and 2 seconds, I’ve now been crowned Xterra 2016 Asian Tour Champion ! – a surprising and wonderful cherry on top of all the fun races and experiences so far this year.
We swam in the harbour this time making for a very still yet warm paddle ! Managed 2nd out of the water behind Jacqui, who had a monster race and lead from start to finish – big congrats. The bike course has a ‘wall’ to get over, a long incline where you need to push your bike for what probably seems a lot longer than it is ! Once down the steep technical jungle other side it’s pretty fast paths/single track through rubber plantations, village back roads, and more jungle for 32km to T2. Carina caught up in one of the single track areas but had a nasty crash just behind me. After we sat for time and made sure everything was ok we were off again. During the ride I was also passed by Myrium, but passed her back again with 3km or so to go. Its exciting when the races are so close ! The run was down the beach twice this year (don’t worry Dave, I don’t dislike you too much haha) passed Myrium again and went over the crazy mountain we did last year – although I am pleased to share there were no leeches this year – It’s been a very dry season for Langkawi. Carina came through for third, I admire her strength.
The Berjaya Resort was amazing to stay at with delicious food and relaxation areas. It’s a great atmosphere too when most athletes are staying in one location. We also had a few scooter trips, jet ski tour, mangrove adventure with monkeys, eagle feeding, a bat cave and fish farm. The wildlife park and Skicab are also must-do’s. Keith, Josie and myself had a blast. There are still so many things to explore so I’m looking forward to next year already.
