April 2016 – Xterra Rotorua / NZ ITU Cross Tri Champs
It was a great day – as usual the weather was perfect so the supporters could make the most of all the expo goodies, food and beautiful lakeside.
The water was really calm and had no tide of course, so the swim was pretty drama free. The bike course is new this year with approx 60-70% technical single track with the remainder being challenging looooooong hills. Made for some exciting racing and I was really pleased to get through steady. As I came into T2 I heard I was 2 mins down on Sarah and 1 min down on Rachel so knew the task ahead. Always cool to have a lap run course because I find the cheering gives me extra energy ! Catching most of the deficit by half way through the run I then managed to keep a good pace through to take the tape !
Having started my Xterra life about 10years ago as a runner in a team at Rotorua, I’m really happy to be champion of the full tri here ! It’s also just my second Pro XTERRA win which is exciting in itself but extra special to be able to share it with Mum, Dad and family and friends. The race also doubled as the New Zealand ITU Cross Tri Champs so a nice cherry on top.
As always, a huge thank you to Robert Harris (actually have become a regular at the Matamata café I think!),The Tooth Fairy, Leppin Sport, EVOC, and Aloha Racing.
Looking forward to Asia Pacific Champs next weekend – I’m determined to see a Koala 🙂
