I knew Maui had dirt, but this mud was like nothing else. The week leading into the World Champs it just didn’t stop raining. This turned practicing the bike course into a new sport – bike skating! Run practice was equally as challenging. However in true Hawaii style the weather cleared up and race day was perfect conditions.
With a strong current flowing parallel to shore, swimming a straight line was not achieved by many ! I felt strong and was pleased to come out of the water in 9th. The bike course at Kapalua has a lot of elevation and the view from the top is breathtaking – literally. I really enjoyed that super fast downhill section and was proud to even pick up a few guys on the way down ! The run felt less comfortable than usual so I revelled in the challenge to push through and was pleased to cross the line. At first I wasn’t sure what to make of 15th, but after seeing the full results and the calibre of the strong ladies field I was happy with the result, hungry for more (as always).
