2015 ITU World Cross Tri Champs – Sardegna

OCTOBER 2015 – ITU WORLD CROSS TRI CHAMPS – SARDEGNA ITALY

Sardegna is a beautiful island to the west of mainland Italy, in October it’s about 22 degrees, pretty dry, with amazing rocky mountains, crystal clear waters, and well tendered olive groves and vineyards. A perfect place to relax after a few hectic days walking the streets and soaking up the sights of Rome !

The course was a 2 lap swim, 2 lap bike, and 3 lap run – so there were plenty of opportunities for spectators to get in on the action – elite races were on Saturday and age group racing on Sunday –  so there were huge crowds for all ! I was really excited to be able to cheer team New Zealand and other friends on – as we are usually all racing at the same time. Kyla, Lucy, and Finn were especially great cheerleaders, complete with supporter stickers and NZ flags 🙂 thanks team !

Swim was non-wetsuit, managed to jump onto a bunch of girls so felt pretty good coming out of the water. The first half of the bike lap was a little hilly – some good grinds and ‘hike your bike’ sections followed by loose gravelly (sharp !) steep descents and hairpin bends. Second half of the lap was pretty fast and flat. By my second bike lap I was starting to warm up and feel strong – even managed to pass a few people carrying my bike up the ‘crying wall’ ! Came into T2 with some gas left in the tank – the run was almost all on soft sand beaches and surrounding forest so I knew not to blow out too early. The run ended up feeling great – proud to have clocked fastest T2 and 3rd fastest run behind the speedy Olympians Flora Duffy and Barbara Riveros. This brought me in at 9th – my first top 10 elite World Champs finish. Very happy. Thanks to Renata for a great sprint finish too – it was a close one !

Next up is the Xterra World Champs in Hawaii where we will all race each other again. I’m looking forward to it, and proud to be sporting a new sponsor on my race suit – Robert Harris Coffee Roasters ! Good Coffee is a crucial part of training.
